FREDERICKSBURG, [VA]--Stickers from a white supremacist group called Patriot Front appeared at several sites on UMW’s Fredericksburg campus over the weekend, campus police reported Sunday evening. The stickers included the words “America First” and the name of the organization, which according to the Anti-Defamation League was founded last year in Texas as “a white supremacist group whose members maintain that their ancestors conquered America and bequeathed it solely to them.” The group’s leader, a 19-year-old, led a contingent at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville last year. James Fields, the man accused of driving his car into a group of counterprotesters and k

SOUTHGATE, [MI]--A Southgate man has been charged with a misdemeanor after allegedly leaving a threatening email at a Riverview church over its controversial sexual identity workshop that some people equate to conversion therapy. Brian Carl Begin II was arraigned Feb. 15 in Wyandotte before 27th District Magistrate Elizabeth DiSanto on a single charge of misuse of telecommunications services. The charge is a six-month misdemeanor, with a fine and penalty of up to $1,000, or both. Metro City Church, 17760 Fort St., has drawn statewide attention over a program that was scheduled to have begun earlier this month titled “Unashamed Identity Workshop” for young girls struggling with their sexu

UNITED STATES, [US]--The teenagers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., who a week ago lost 17 of their classmates and school staff members in a mass shooting, have emerged as passionate advocates for reform, speaking openly of their anger in the hope of forcing a reckoning on guns. But in certain right-wing corners of the web — and, increasingly, from more mainstream voices like Rush Limbaugh and a commentator on CNN — the students are being portrayed not as grief-ridden survivors but as pawns and conspiracy theorists intent on exploiting a tragedy to undermine the nation’s laws. In these baseless accounts, which by Tuesday had spread rapidly on social media, the

CHAPEL HILL, [NC]--UNC-Chapel Hill officials warned of possible trouble on campus as rumors swirled of a white nationalist rally planned for Wednesday. Kevin Guskiewicz, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, sent a message to deans and department chairs, saying word has spread that “individuals not affiliated with UNC-Chapel Hill” are planning a “Rally for Nationalism.” “As a public university, we regularly have demonstrations from groups exercising their First Amendment rights, and our police officers are always prepared to ensure that those demonstrations transpire in a safe manner and do not disrupt our university operations,” Guskiewicz wrote. He did not mention the ex

CANNONBALL, [ND]--Michael Foster, 53, is a mild-mannered mental health counselor and father of two from Seattle, with short-cropped silver hair and soft features. But in a North Dakota court last October, prosecutors painted Foster as a ruthless killer and agent of chaos. The prosecution team compared him to the 9/11 hijackers who killed 2,996 people in the worst terror attack in history, and warned that he envisioned an anarchic future under Islamic religious law. Prosecutors even put him in a league with Ted Kaczynski, the so-called Unabomber whose 17-year bombing spree left three dead and injured 23. Foster hadn’t killed anyone. He didn’t even injure anyone when, on Oct. 11, 2016, he

CASPER, [WY]--At least four fliers from a well-known white supremacist group were found on Casper College bulletin boards this week, a spokesman said. The fliers were hung up by Identity Evropa, a white supremacist group, and photos of them were posted to the group’s Twitter account on Tuesday. Two of the fliers read “serve your people.” The other two state “our destiny is ours” and “our future belongs to us.” The text is posted over images of classical art, including sculptures of Julius Caesar. Identity Evropa has been called a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Its members helped organize the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which included whi

PARKLAND, [FL]--Nikolas Cruz made a brief appearance in court for a procedural matter Monday, shortly after a law enforcement source revealed that the 19-year-old school shooter obtained 10 rifles in the last year or so. Cruz purchased two weapons from Gun World of South Florida in Deerfield Beach, said Kim Waltuch, the store’s CEO. She would not provide details on the types of guns he purchased or on the time frame, but said the sales followed normal protocol for Florida firearms purchases. As investigators work to track Cruz’s other gun purchases, students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School say they’re determined to ensure that the deaths of their 17 classmates and tea

EAST ORANGE, [NJ]--A man plowed a stolen bakery truck into a Planned Parenthood clinic in New Jersey this week, hurting three people — including a pregnant woman, authorities said this week. Marckles Alcius, 31, pleaded not guilty Friday after officials at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said he crashed into the East Orange clinic’s waiting room deliberately Wednesday. He has been charged with aggravated assault, theft and attempt to cause widespread injury and damage. The crash sent two patients and a staff member in the wrecked lobby to a local hospital for minor injuries. The wounded have since been released. Alcius, of Lowell, Mass., was not hurt in the wreck. Authorities have

PARKLAND, [FL]--In a private Instagram group chat, confessed school shooter Nikolas Cruz repeatedly espoused racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic views and displayed an obsession with violence and guns. Wednesday, 19-year-old Cruz opened fire at the school that expelled him, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Authorities say he killed 17 with his legally purchased AR-15.  CNN, investigating comments the shooter may have left on a now-deleted YouTube channel, was added to the private Instagram group by one of the active members in it. The responding group members, who appear to be younger than 18, have refused to confirm their identities. Racism was a constant theme i

PORTLAND, [OR]--U.S. District Court Judge Anna Brown sentenced defendant Jason Patrick to 21 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for his role in the 2016 occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. In March 2017, a federal jury convicted Patrick and Darryl Thorn on felony conspiracy charges. That same month, Brown also convicted Patrick of three misdemeanor charges: trespassing, tampering with vehicles and equipment and destruction and removal of property at the refuge. According to court documents, co-conspirator Jason Blomgren described Patrick as “No. 5” in the chain of command in occupation efforts. Brown issued her sentencing after a three-
