PORTLAND, [OR]--Police arrested 14 people and seized more than a dozen weapons as thousands of demonstrators and counter protesters converged in downtown Portland, Oregon, on Sunday. A pro-President Donald Trump free speech rally drew several hundred to a plaza near City Hall more than a week after two Portland men were fatally stabbed trying to stop a man from shouting anti-Muslim insults at two teenage girls on a light-rail train. That rally was met across the street by hundreds of counter-protesters organized by immigrant rights, religious and labor groups. They said they wanted to make a stand against hate and racism. Portland police said Sunday evening that 14 people were arrested, and

ANCHORAGE, [AK]--A man broke into GCI offices in Midtown Anchorage Sunday morning, threatening employees and causing "significant damage to infrastructure" before being taken into custody, according to the Anchorage Police Department. The damage led to statewide internet and phone outages, including to 911 services, APD said. In a statement, GCI said the person broke into the Denali Towers building at 9:50 a.m. Sunday. Police initially wrote that they responded "to a report of a man with a knife" at the building more than an hour later, at 11:04 a.m. Police later said that "(t)he weapon involved in the incident was not a knife as it was originally believed to be," without specifying what, i

UNITED STATES, [US]--The murder in College Park, Maryland of Richard Collins III, an African-American student who had recently been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was days away from his graduation from Bowie State University, underscores the violence of America’s far-right wing. Sean Urbanski, the University of Maryland student who allegedly stabbed Collins to death, belongs to a racist Facebook group called Alt-Reich: Nation. It makes sense that the FBI is helping the police investigate this incident as a suspected hate crime. But my 15 years experience of studying violent extremism in Western societies has taught me that dealing effectively with far-right violen

PORTLAND, [OR]--One week after two men were stabbed to death while defending two girls from a racist and Islamophobic diatribe on a commuter train, Portland, Oregon, is bracing for more violence. On Sunday, over the mayor's objection, a right-wing group will hold a pro-Trump "free speech rally," while anti-fascist activists are preparing to protest the gathering. It's a pattern that has played out across the country since the election: Pro-Trump events from Pikeville, Kentucky, to Berkeley, California, attract white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and Klansmen along with other provocateurs from the so-called "alt-right." And, predictably, "antifa" counterprotesters mask up to oppose them—often ph

UNITED STATES, [US]--The systemic failure of both the major parties’ elites to adequately respond to the side effects of mechanization and globalization — particularly the real decline of wages with respect to inflation and the great decrease in good-paying jobs for those with less education — has gradually radicalized American politics and society. The provocations and recriminations that Donald Trump injected into our politics ever since he declared his presidential candidacy has only accelerated the trend. Initially, most of the radicalization began on the right as Republican political strategists found it easier to use divisive cultural issues like abortion, homosexuality and relig

GRAHAM, [NC]--Two Marines were arrested after displaying a banner featuring a white nationalist phrase. 32-year-old Joseph Warner Manning and 35-year-old Michael Joseph Chesney were booked May 20 on one count of misdemeanor first-degree trespassing. Cops said the two showed up at pro-Confederate rally in Graham, North Carolina. The pair allegedly climbed up to the top of a building, and depicted a banner with two phrases. Across the center, there was a quote from George Orwell’s novel 1984: “He who controls the past controls the future.” Then, along the edge was the phrase: “YWNRU.” It stands for “You will not replace us.” The slogan is associated with white nationalist and so-

PORTLAND, [OR]--In February 2016, 15 months before he was accused of stabbing three people on a train in Portland, Oregon, and killing two, Jeremy Christian pledged to kill whoever was elected president of the United States: “I Hereby Solemnly swear to Die trying to Kill Hillary (Herself a filthy Murderess) Clinton and Donald Trump should they be elected to the post of President in my faire country on (sic) Vinland,” Christian wrote in a Facebook post. Then he pledged his threat to an ancient Nordic god, as well as Hindu and Egyptian goddesses: “This I swear to Odin, Kali, Bastet and all other Pagan Gods and Goddesses in my Aryan Theosophical Nucleus. LAS VEGAS, [NV]--A judge called a New Hampshire man a "bully vigilante" and sentenced him Wednesday to more than seven years in prison for his role organizing armed backers of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy after a standoff with U.S. agents in 2014. Gerald "Jerry" DeLemus became the first person sentenced for his ties to the confrontation that became a rallying cry for those who want vast stretches of federal land in the U.S. West put under local control. Eighteen others are in custody. DeLemus has been jailed for almost 16 months, so the sentence means the 62-year-old former U.S. Marine will spend about six more years behind bars. View More>>

UNITED STATES, [US]--The anti-Muslim white supremacist charged with murdering two men in Portland, Oregon, when they intervened in his bigoted tirade at two teenagers is the kind of extremist that former Department of Homeland Security official Daryl Johnson worried about. Eight years ago, working in the department’s now-defunct Extremism and Radicalization Branch, Johnson authored a memo intended to warn law enforcement about the threat posed by right-wing extremists. It wasn’t just the election of the first black president, he wrote, but the troubled economic situation, the divisive political climate, and angry rhetoric about immigrants and outsiders that could spark attacks.
