SALT LAKE CITY, [UT]—Tim DeChristopher is nothing if not committed. Back in December of 2008, in the waning days of the Bush Administration, then-27 year-old DeChristopher threw a monkey wrench into a planned Bureau of Land Management (BLM) auction of thousands of acres of public territory in Utah for oil and gas exploration. DeChristopher—a college student at the University of Utah and an environmental activist—infiltrated the auction and sabotaged the sale, bidding up the price of land until he'd won more than 12,000 acres worth, at the cost of $1.79 million. Eventually, BLM officials figured out that the twentysomething college student was not in fact an oil and gas magnate, and t

UNIVERSITY CITY, [MO]—A cell phone linked to Todd L. Shepherd was found discarded a few blocks from where a University City police sergeant was shot and killed on Halloween night in 2008. Shepherd reportedly talked for years about killing police to spark an antigovernment revolution. Investigators said they know of no known connection between Shepherd and the slain officer until Shepherd is alleged to have approached the officer's parked patrol car and fired five shots with a stolen .38 caliber pistol.  View More>>

GRAND RAPIDS, [MI]—Investigators are now calling the vandalism, arson and threatening letter to residents in the East Hills neighborhood "domestic terrorism." A fire on February 22, 2011, heavily damaged a condominium under construction. Three days later, neighbors received a letter from a group calling themselves "the Old Neighbors" claiming responsibility for the arson. The group demanded that area residents be forced back to the suburbs and demanded low-income housing. Police believe the letter is related to two previous rounds of graffiti and vandalism in the area that protested gentrification. View More>>

UNITED STATES [US]—A civil rights group says law enforcement from across the country have contacted it to report "a dramatic increase" in the level of sovereign citizen activity. Since the murder last May 20 of two West Memphis, Arkansas police officers by two members of the so-called "sovereign citizens" movement, police from around the country have contacted the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to report what one detective in Kentucky described as a "dramatic increase in sovereign citizen activity." The SPLC also notes a Treasury Department report from this year that worries about increasing attacks and threats levied against IRS employees and facilities. UNITED STATES [US]—It sounds too much like the 1980s and 90s in the Midwest after the farm crisis. Flag-waving, God-loving men and women, many of them who had lost their farms and way of life, found a home in the militia and white supremacist movements. They talked a lot like the most rabid today, with an odd brew of antigovernment fury sprinkled heartily with simple racism. A lot of them shut up after their comrade in arms, Timothy McVeigh, blew up the Federal building in Oklahoma City and killed a bunch of little kids in a day care center. View More>>

SAN DIEGO,  [CA]—The Assistant Chief of the San Diego Police Department calls is a "perfect storm" of racism, spurred on by the election of a black president and the economy. Many white supremacists are furious at the census projection that whites will lose their majority status in the United States by 2050. In San Diego, the United Society of Aryan Skinheads (USAS) and the National Socialist Movement (NSM), a derivative of the American Nazi Party along the West Coast, are increasing their numbers in the region. SACRAMENTO, [CA]—News and Review recently attended a meeting of the Republic of the united States in Sacramento - a sovereign citizen group. That lower case "u" in "united" is intentional - and underscores the heart of the Republic's mission to create a so-called shadow government that will restore the United States to its "lawful de jure" system by reviving the country's "original" constitution.  The same Constitution, which according to members of the Republic, was abandoned in 1871 in favor of a new document that took away states' rights and changed the United States into a business with just one goal: to turn every U.S. citizen into an individual corporation off of which it can profit
