RENO, [NV]—The 36-year-old Sparks man jailed on suspicion of an arson, shooting and vandalism spree - who says he targeted strip clubs, Sparks police, a Verdi post office and Reno Fourth Street motels - wants people to call him a "gangsta", an "assassin" and a "shadow." Justin Michael Bennett said he also thinks the labels of "vigilante" or "religious martyr" fits, too. Bennett said during a jailhouse interview that he chose Christmas to act because it symbolized Jesus' birthday and would incite the public to pay attention to his message of religious morality. A police spokesperson said Bennett told investigators he left anti-government graffiti on the post office to throw off police.

UNITED STATES, [US]—Far-right groups like the Militia of Montana say they are rooting for Ron Paul as a stalwart against government tyranny. The white supremacists, survivalists and anti-Zionists who have rallied behind his candidacy have not exactly been warmly welcomed. "I wouldn't be happy with that," Mr. Paul said in an interview Friday when asked about getting help from volunteers with anti-Jewish or anti-black views. But he did not disavow their support, "If they want to endorse me, they're endorsing what I do or say - it has nothing to do with endorsing what they say," said Mr. Paul. Mr. Paul's calls for the end of the Federal Reserve System, a cessation of aid to Israel and all

LANSING, [MI]—A threats-by-mail complaint was reported to staff at the 55th District Court. Both judges and two administrators received threatening letters from a self-proclaimed "sovereign citizen" who had been cited for motor vehicle registration and an insurance violation subsequent to a traffic violation.  The letters to both judges were sent to their homes, which personalizes the threats rather than treating them as a result of court business.  The investigation remains open. WASHINGTON, [PA]—On December 18, 2011, Eli Franklin Myers III shot two East Washington police officers during a routine traffic stop along Interstate highway 70 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.  For those who follow domestic extremist activity, it was a familiar scenario that has played out time and time again on roadways throughout the United States.   One of the officers was lying defenseless on the pavement after suffering a gunshot wound to the thigh when he was shot a second time by Myers in the side of the head.  A second officer, who arrived as backup, was shot in the hand as he took cover from Myers’ deadly rampage.  Myers fled the scene, retreating to his home in Web

LISBON, [PT]—Portugal's Supreme Court has refused a request to extradite convicted killer and fugitive George Wright to the U.S. A lower court had ruled that Wright, 68, had become a Portuguese citizen and the statute of limitations on his 15 to 30 year sentence for a New Jersey robbery-murder had expired. Wright's fugitive odyssey began when he busted out of Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, New Jersey, on August 19, 1970, and made his way to Detroit, where he joined the Black Liberation Army. Dressed as a priest, he hijacked a Delta flight to Miami with four others, using handguns they sneaked onto the plane. After releasing the plane's 86 passengers for $1 million, the hijackers forced

ERIE, [PA]—For years, Erie County Councilman Ebert Beeman managed to avoid prison as he racked up convictions for driving under a suspended driver's license. That risky game of legal brinkmanship with the government ended Thursday in Erie County Court as a pair of handcuffs locked on Beeman's wrists. Beeman, the libertarian-minded councilman from Waterford, is also battling the IRS and Social Security fraud charges in U.S. District Court.  Sheriff's deputies testified they monitored Beeman because he subscribes to sovereign citizens' ideology. Beeman has denied any knowledge of the sovereign citizen movement, despite the fact that his court filings in federal and county court are riddle

TACOMA, [WA]—A man accused of helping in the 2001 firebombing of the University of Washington's horticulture center has pleaded guilty to arson and conspiracy charges. Justin Solondz, an affiliate of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), entered his plea Tuesday in federal court in Tacoma. He expects a seven-year prison sentence as part of a deal with prosecutors. Solondz sentencing is scheduled for March 16.
