TAMPA, [FL]—On the campaign trail, former Pinellas County Sheriff Everett Rice sometimes boasts of the support he's getting from Richard Mack, head of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. In a county where office-holders traditionally track to the political center, the endorsement is an odd one to bring up. Rice himself is now flirting with ideas well outside mainstream political discourse. He says he doesn't know whether President Barack Obama is really a U.S. citizen, and he is open to discussing far-right fears that a United Nations environmental compact known as Agenda 21 is a secret plot to establish "one-world government." Most striking, he decided to sign

PHOENIX, [AZ]—The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors won't accept private funds to offset nearly $10,000 spent to investigate President Barack Obama's residency status. County Sheriff Joe Arpaio sent a deputy to Hawaii last month to verify Obama's birth records. So-called "birthers" claim Obama is ineligible to hold the country's highest elected office because they contend he was born in Kenya, his father's homeland. Hawaii officials have repeatedly confirmed Obama's citizenship and verified Obama's birth records to Arizona's elections chief. View More>>

SALT LAKE CITY, [UT]—Even as his followers' home base comes under fire from a federal civil rights lawsuit, polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs has been excommunicating dozens of people, apparently accusing them of breaking his ban on sex, former sect members say. Some 50 people have been tossed out of the group in recent weeks and leaders loyal to Jeffs have halted all church meetings until the "lifting up", or end of the world, said a brother to Jeffs who was himself cast out last year. The recently excommunicated include high-profile leaders and high-ranking sect members at the group's "Yearning for Zion" or YFZ ranch near Eldorado, Texas. Also among the rejected are the group's midw

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, [CN]—A suspicious overnight fire in the core of Stanley Park destroyed a Vancouver Parks Board truck and is raising fears that a serial arsonist could be targeting the park. Firefighters responded to the works yard parking lot just after 10:30 p.m. PT where they found the truck fully engulfed in flames, and two others catching fire. They quickly extinguished the vehicle fire, but not before it destroyed one truck, significantly damaging two other trucks, and left a nearby tool shed with minor damage. The parking lot is adjacent to horse stables used by the Vancouver Police Department's Mounted Unit and the Triple A Horse and Carriage stables. View More>

SALEM, [OR]—It was quite a day at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. Members of Earth First! made a notable showing inside and outside the state building. Members of Cascadia Earth First! and Cascadia Forest Defenders converged at the Capitol building and some activists chained themselves together to stage a "die-in" in the offices of state representatives. Others dropped banners from flagpoles. Today's protest is an escalation in a series of protests calling on the Land Board to stop the clear cutting of ancient forests and to separate public school funding from forest management. View More>>

KISSIMMEE, [FL]—All but a few of the American Front white supremacy group have been released in recent weeks on drastically reduced bails for their trial on domestic terrorism charges. Most were arrested in early May after a two-year investigation by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force that focused on firearms training at the group's headquarters in Holopaw, a rural community in eastern Osceola County. The 13 members arrested so far were charged with participating in anti-government paramilitary training to prepare for a race war and conspiring to attack an as-yet-unidentified target. SEATTLE, [WA]—The Animal Liberation Front (ALF), one of two underground groups that the University of Washington arsonists aligned themselves with, is showing new signs of life. In January, the ALF claimed responsibility for an arson at Harris Feeding Company in Fresno, California. The proceeding September, an Oregon mink farm was raided and three hundred mink released. A couple of months later, the ALF claimed responsibility for another mink release in Oregon - the fourth in the Astoria area alone in the past three years. Greg Harvey, a Eugene police detective who helped cracked the cell responsible for the UW arson and a string of others along the West Coast, has noticed the trend. View
