KNOXVILLE, [TN]—A federal jury today convicted a former Gatlinburg businessman in a scheme to beat the IRS in the tax game. A U.S. District Court jury deliberated roughly seven hours over two days before finding David Miner guilty of plotting to impede and harass IRS agents and twice failing to file income tax returns. For $1,200, Miner sold a program to "decode" via an IRS manual a client's Individual Master File, or IMF, which uses computer codes to document a person's tax history, point out errors and write letters demanding the IRS fix those problems. Miner also advised clients to target specific IRS agents with threats and civil and criminal litigation, testimony has shown. Miner c

Beavers and his wife, Beverly S. Beavers.  One floor up, an Assistant U.S. Attorney launched his case against Gatlinburg businessman David Miner. TAMPA, [FL]—A man who lives on a tree farm in Pasco County recently answered his door wearing body armor, with a .45 caliber handgun strapped to his chest. He alarmed an acquaintance, the FBI alleges, by talking about killing law enforcement officers. Paul James Szaraz, 47, isn't supposed to have guns. He's a felon with convictions for burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, marijuana possession and drunken driving. A U.S. magistrate judge said in court Monday that investigators found an "enormous" quantity of weapons, ammunition and body armor while searching Szaraz's home in Hudson. The FBI would not elaborate on how many weapons were found. They did comment that weapons were placed str

MEMPHIS, [TN]—Some downtown businesses and residents say they need to know what streets will be closed so they can prepare for this weekend's KKK rally. Memphis police say they  don't have any information on street closures to announce yet, but they will release them in what they consider a timely manner.  As people in the downtown area prepare themselves for crowds marching up and down the street to the courthouse, they say the Memphis Police Department is not giving them enough warning. Despite the Klan organizers promising the biggest rally in its history, and the chance for counter protestors, Memphis police aren't telling anyone what streets are closing and what areas may be bl

The suspect, Evan Ebel, died Thursday after a harrowing chase and gunfight with Texas authorities. Colorado authorities announced Monday that ballistics tests confirmed that the 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol Ebel fired in North Texas was also used in the March 19 killing of Tom Clements, who headed Colorado prisons. A black backpack contained explosive materials, bomb-making instructions, handwritten directions and documents from the Colorado

MONTGOMERY, [AL]—A Skipperville man and self-proclaimed president of a sovereign citizen group was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the United States following a five-day trial in federal court last week. DENVER, [CO]—The killing of Colorado prisons chief Tom Clements may be linked to a white supremacist gang. Law enforcement is trying to determine whether Clements, who was shot and killed in the doorway to his Monument, Colo., home, was the subject of an ordered "hit" by the group -- or one of its members acted alone. The gang, the 211 Crew, ran together inside Sterling Correctional Complex before state prison officials opted to break them up by transferring some members to Buena Vista Correctional Center. Police said a bullet casing found at the scene of Clements' killing matches that of casings found following a high speed chase and shoot-out in Texas involving noted 211 Crew memb
