MANDEVILLE, [LA]—Authorities are on the scene of a former Internal Revenue Service agent's home in Mandeville, where a suspicious case left at the front door has triggered an evacuation of nearby homes in the Golden Glen subdivision. The possible bomb was reported around 11:30 a.m. At 5:00 p.m., a bomb squad from St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office had blasted the suspicious case with a water cannon. What investigators could see inside the case leads them to believe it might be an actual explosive device. The package turned out to be a chess set. View More>>

BUFFALO, [NY]—Leslie James Pickering knows the FBI is watching him. He wants to know how, when it will end and whether others are targeted. Pickering, a former spokesman for the press office of the Earth Liberation Front, a radical environmental group, has filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Buffalo to learn the answers. Pickering's ties to the Earth Liberation Front, or ELF, are well known. He was a founder and spokesman for its press office, but he claims he was never involved in their illegal activities. View More>>

HARLEM, [NY]—King Samir Shabazz says black people should create militias to exterminate whites, skin them alive, pour acid on them, sic pit bulls on them, bust their heads with rocks and even raid nurseries to "kill everything white in sight." Such sentiment hasn't gotten him arrested. But allegedly carrying a gun did. Shabazz, 41, whose real name is Maruse Heath, is best known for sparking a federal probe for voter intimidation after he brought a billy club to a North Philly polling place on Election Day 2008. But on Thursday night, police in New York spotted him wearing a bulletproof vest in Harlem, stopped him and found him carrying a loaded, unlicensed handgun. He was jailed on $75,0

TAMPA, [FL]—Politics has assumed an oddly prominent role in the criminal case of Joshua and Sharyn Hakken, the Tampa engineers accused of kidnapping their sons and fleeing more than 300 miles on a sailboat to Cuba. At the case's outset, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said the couple were "antigovernment," a characterization echoed in news coverage. Some sympathizers have bristled at the focus on the Hakkens' ideology, saying the pair have been unfairly painted as extremists. Authorities say the Hakkens, after learning in April their parental rights were terminated by a court in Louisiana, kidnapped their children from Sharyn Hakken's mother and set sail from Madeira Beach. They

MARYSVILLE, [WA]—Self-proclaimed anarchists have caused hundreds if not thousands of dollars in property damage in Marysville. The vandals struck an Armed Forces Recruiting Center twice in the last week. The first time, they just smashed out a window. But according to a post on the Puget Sound Anarchists' website, that wasn't enough. More windows were smashed and the locks glued shut. Early Monday morning, the vandals did the same thing at a nearby Wells Fargo branch. Marysville Police detectives are hoping surveillance cameras at the bank spotted the people responsible. Other than the Puget Sound Anarchists' website, Marysville police don't have many leads. View More>>

PITTSBURGH, [PA]—Pittsburgh police arrested a man for swinging an ax at people in Frick Park. Police say 39-year-old Frederic Park is accused of threatening several people with an ax, including knocking a water bottle out of one man's hand with the ax. Park also reportedly threw a garbage can at that same man. Park reportedly ran from officers when they tried to track him down. Sunday, police say an African-American man was doing pull-ups in the park, when Park called him a racial slur and said "God Bless the KKK" before swinging an ax at him. Police say they have previously arrested Park for threats and harassment, and that he has been living in the woods since being kicked out of the

JEFFERSON CITY, [MO]—Imagine the scenario: A federal agent attempts to arrest someone for illegally selling a machine gun. Instead, the federal agent is arrested—charged in a state court with the crime of enforcing federal gun laws. Farfetched? Not as much as you might think. The scenario would become conceivable if legislation passed by Missouri's Republican-led Legislature is signed into law by Democratic Governor Jay Nixon. The Missouri legislation is perhaps the most extreme example of a states' rights movement that has been spreading across the nation. States are increasingly adopting laws that purport to nullify federal laws—setting up intentional legal conflicts, directing loca

MANSFIELD, [OH]—The Richland County Sheriff's Office says a nationwide warrant has been issued for a mother who took her two children after a custody ruling. Danielle M. LOS ANGELES, [CA]—It's not exactly the Bling Ring, but Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested the remaining fugitive in what officials say was a scheme built around fraudulent Macy's gift cards that targeted more than 40 stores and netted more than $200,000. Richard Reyes Duenas, 30, was arrested in Las Vegas and booked Thursday in Los Angeles County on felony charges including grand theft, conspiracy to commit fraud and access card fraud. Police said the ring was uncovered when Duenas was pulled over during a traffic stop in 2010 and claimed he was a "sovereign citizen," one of a group of people who refuse to recognize government law and authority. Duenas was arrest
