DOBBS FERRY, [NY]—A 72-year-old New York man accused of killing his wife in their second home in Cherry Ridge Twp. in 2010 pleaded guilty Thursday days before he was set to stand trial. Robert Jufer of Dobbs Ferry could face as much as 22 years in state prison, having pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, and tampering with evidence, a second-degree misdemeanor. State police charged Mr. Jufer in February on allegations he shot his 68-year-old wife, June Jufer, in the head with a shotgun while she slept in their White Mills Road home on Oct. 17, 2010. More than 100 guns, pyrotechnic equipment and camouflage clothing were found in the home. "Mr. Jufer lived as

WILLIAMSPORT, [PA]—Investigators in the Marcellus Shale gas region have a mystery on their hands. Were the hazardous devices, including pipe bombs, discovered near natural gas well sites in four counties in the past 14 months meant to be attacks on the natural gas industry, domestic terrorism, vandalism or people testing homemade devices in remote areas? With no suspects except in one case, "we don't know the intent," said a spokesperson for the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force based in Williamsport. It does not appear the natural gas industry was targeted because no environmental group has come forward to claim responsibility, he said. The last incident was a five-inch pipe bomb found May 1

LEXINGTON PARK, [MD]—On Saturday, October 26, 2013, St. Mary's County Sheriff's deputies responded to Cadillac Jacks on Great Mills Road for a disturbance. Deputies were informed that Donte A. Moss, 33, of Lexington Park, was asked to leave the establishment due to his behavior and attempting to start multiple fights. Moss was again told numerous times to leave the premises, however he refused. Moss then informed deputies that he was "a sovereign citizen" and that he "could not be arrested." Moss also claimed he had a Second Amendment right to free speech [Comment: Wrong amendment]. A deputy explained to Moss that it was in fact the First Amendment that gave him free speech, he then

QUINCY, [MA]—Less than four months ago, David Courage savagely beat his pregnant girlfriend in the Wollaston section of Quincy, biting one of her fingers until it broke and sending her to the emergency room at Quincy Medical Center with severe head trauma, another bite wound to the neck and many bruises. Despite the beating, Courage's 25-year-old girlfriend, Cory Lyn Wojcuilewicz, stuck by him as he sat in the county jail in Dedham, plotting with him over the last two months to sell enough of the club drug known as "molly" to raise bail and get him sprung from jail. The plots unfolded on the telephone lines at the county jail and the ensuing drug deals on the streets of Quincy, all whi

FREDERICK, [MD]—Some in Frederick are baffled by recent recruitment efforts from the Ku Klux Klan, leaving them eager to celebrate the city's diversity to counter the KKK effort. Fliers were left on doorsteps and parked cars on Oct. 5. Some fliers were left near Hood College.  The fliers depicted machine guns or men in hooded robes and included phrases such as "Our race is our nation." Members of the Loyal White Knights, a North Carolina KKK group with a "realm" in western Maryland, used the 16-day federal government shutdown as an opportunity to recruit new members to the organization deemed by many as a hate group. Loyal White Knights spokesperson Michael Daud said the group is

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, [CN]—Training for front-line officers and better information sharing between police and government agencies can help protect law enforcement officials from potentially aggressive "sovereign citizens," says a newly declassified briefing to Canadian police chiefs. The presentation, prepared for a meeting of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, called the libertarian-inspired philosophy "a growing concern" that poses a "threat to officer and public safety." Enforcement agencies are becoming increasingly wary of sovereign citizens, members of the Freeman-on-the-Land movement and other like-minded people who resist police and government authority. Adherents say they s

CONCORD, [NH]—A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against the Weare Police Department this week, denying a man who does not seem to recognize local government authority $5 million in damages over an arrest he calls a kidnapping. In September 2011, the Weare police arrested David Johnson for driving after his license had been revoked and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration. In February 2012, Johnson was found guilty of those charges. In January 2012, however, Johnson sued the town of Weare, the police department and a police officer involved in his arrest four months earlier. Johnson, who represented himself in court, alleged the Weare police and the town violated

LEITH, [ND]—Craig Cobb's movement to create an all-white community in Leith continues to grow. A third white supremacist has reportedly moved into town. Albert Borgmann of Minot has set up a tent and says he plans to stay in Leith. Cobb says he'll make room in his house for other white supremacists, in order to gain a voting majority. The Leith City council will meet on Sunday to hold a second reading of a building moratorium. They're also looking to hire additional security for meetings after a tirade on Friday by Cobb follower Kynan Dutton. View More>>

JOPLIN, [MO]—Tucked into the deeply evangelical corner of southwestern Missouri, the Islamic Society of Joplin's mosque was an oasis for Muslims - the only mosque within a 50-mile radius. But, in August 2012, during Ramadan, the building was burned to the ground in an apparent arson fire. It was the second attempt made on the mosque in about a month; activists feared a hate crime, and a team of federal and local investigators couldn't find a suspect. But now, a surprise turn in a different arson case has implicated an Iraq veteran, who officials say confessed over the weekend to burning down the mosque in addition to making attempts on the local Planned Parenthood office.
