BURLINGTON, [NC]—A Rockingham County Board of Education member has acknowledged participating in an anti-government group planning to use methods of questionable legality to hold local law enforcement and judicial officials responsible for actions the group does not accept as legitimate. Members of the movement, called sovereign citizens, are known for being anti-government and for believing themselves to be above the law. School board member Ron Price’s name appears on a Facebook page that appears to represent the views of sovereign citizens. When asked if he considers himself a sovereign citizen he replied, “I would.” He quickly changed the wording, though. “Let me correct that,

AUSTIN, [TX]—Wednesday night, Hays County officials briefly closed down RM 3237 in Wimberley while they — along with the Austin P.D. bomb squad investigated what they eventually determined to be an explosive device containing C-4. That's an illegal military grade explosive that the public can't get. They eventually detonated the device to render it safe. Many of the neighbors we spoke with seem to have a good idea of who is responsible — a survivalist that owns the property next to the hill. Apparently the man is constantly scaring people by walking up and down the road in fatigues carrying firearms. Hays County hasn't given us much more information on the explosives and they told us

SEATTLE, [WA]—Brendan McCormack made an appearance Friday (Jan. 17) in King County Court. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the Seattle Police detective in the case did not have his information prepared in time for the prosecutors to move forward with charges. He said his office will review the case and if everything is in order, file charges against McCormack later this week. Recently cops were following up on a series of bank vandalism incidents on Capitol Hill.  ATMs and windows were smashed at five different banks and anarchist graffiti was sprayed on most of them.  There was also anarchist graffiti on a Starbucks and an American Apparel store. Tuesday Seattle Police arrested

NICHOLASVILLE, [KY]—A Nicholasville woman accused of bankruptcy fraud should stay in jail until her trial, a federal magistrate judge has ruled. Evidence indicates Sheryl A. Bruner lied repeatedly and that she has access to a lot of money she could use to flee. The judge concluded there were no release conditions he could impose that would reasonably assure Bruner would stick around for her trial, scheduled to begin March 10. Bruner was charged this month with stealing disability checks from the Social Security Administration, lying about her eligibility for disability, concealing assets from the agency, and making false statements when she filed for bankruptcy in May. Bruner has pleaded

BONNEY LAKE, [WA]—During a November 2013 episode of the National Geographic Channel TV show “Doomsday Preppers,” Tyler Smith described his plans to commit armed robbery and was filmed loading and firing two rifles on his property in Buckley, Pierce County. Though he may claim he was preparing for doomsday, there was one problem: Smith, 26, is a convicted felon, which makes him ineligible to possess firearms. He was arrested Wednesday and booked on two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. Smith was arrested without incident in Bonney Lake. He recently moved there from the farm where the episode was filmed in Mar

FLUSHING, [OH]—The Ku Klux Klan was in Flushing, Ohio on Monday, leaving flyers on residents' porches. People discovered the flyers, sealed in plastic bags, with anti-Martin Luther King rhetoric and with a phone number where the Loyal White Knights of the KKK could be reached for those wanting to join. Ironically, one of the persons who received a flyer was the founder and curator of the Underground Railroad Museum, John Mattox. Mattox said residents did not appreciate the visit. Mattox said the Constitution guarantees every citizen freedom of expression. In the end, he quoted Martin Luther King, saying, "We will hang on to love, because hate is too heavy a burden." He said Flushing reside

OCALA, [FL]—Members of a group called the Common Law Grand Jury demanded on Tuesday that the County Commission help them seek justice on behalf of citizens whose rights have been ignored or thwarted by government officials. Asserting authority derived from the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, the Florida Constitution and a U.S. Supreme Court ruling authored by Justice Antonin Scalia, the group maintained it was standing up on behalf of “we the people,” as society’s “supreme rulers.” Their demands: three secure rooms in the county courthouse; five new laptops; new printers, reams of paper, a conference table and office supplies; 30 “comfortable” chairs for jurors, four leaders

SOMERSET, [KY]—It was a paper weighed down with rocks inside a sandwich bag. The paper had a phone number and a web address for the “Loyal White Knights” of the Ku Klux Klan along with the phrase, “Save our land, join the Klan.”  Police say they received complaints all over Pulaski County. The papers appear to be from the KKK and were left in driveways the day before Martin Luther King, Junior Day. The paper residents received specifically targeted the slain civil rights leader with language to offensive too show. People interviewed by the news media say all the papers were found Sunday morning and police think they were left late Saturday night while many were sleeping. The pa

MINNEAPOLIS, [MN]—A militia member indicted in what the FBI once characterized as a terror plot to blow up a west-central Minnesota police station and other locations,  pleaded guilty Friday [Jan. 10]  to weapons charges. Buford Braden Rogers, 25, of Montevideo pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis to one count of possessing a firearm illegally because he's a convicted felon and one count of possessing an unregistered destructive device, namely "two black powder and nail devices." Two other counts, including charges related to possessing two Molotov cocktails and a pipe bomb, were dropped by the US Attorney's office. Rogers will remain in custody until sentencing. The de
