JOHNSTOWN, [PA]—A Fayette County man who murdered a Northern Cambria man while both were inmates at the Cambria County Prison should not have been housed as part of the general population, according to a federal lawsuit filed at U.S. District Court in Johnstown. The civil lawsuit filed Friday on behalf of the family of William Sherry named Cambria County and inmate William Cramer, the man convicted in Sherry’s Aug. 4, 2012, death. The lawsuit alleges that Sherry was subjected to cruel and unusual punishment when he was murdered by Cramer, his cellmate at the Cambria Township prison. In early November, Cramer was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. Sherry, 28, was p

CONCORD, [NH]—Corrections and state police officials are investigating an assault last summer at the Concord prison that may have been part of a plan by white supremacist gang members to target a former ally. The attack occurred in mid-August and left inmate Matthew York, 26, with “multiple facial” injuries, said prison spokesman Jeff Lyons. Lyons declined to detail the incident, citing the inquiry, but said York was moved to the prison’s medical wing to be treated. York’s wife, Kelly York, said the damage was so severe that doctors had considered reconstructive surgery. In an interview last week, she said she first learned of the assault from another inmate, who phoned and said he

GILBERTON, [PA]—A foul-mouthed former police chief whose incendiary videos on guns and liberals led to his suspension and departure said Monday his nascent reality TV show could feature a militia-style group he started last month. Speaking at a news conference in his attorney's office, former Gilberton Chief Mark Kessler said the group, called 3 Percent Boots on the Ground, already has a "few thousand" members in chapters around the country. The group will train monthly and require members, who are vetted by Kessler, to supply their own fatigues, combat boots, body armor, sidearms and military-style rifles. Members will attain ranks like private, lieutenant and colonel. Though Kessler gain

JERSEY CITY, [NJ]—About 40 members of Jersey City’s Indian/Sikh community held a special meeting with city council members Wednesday night telling them of two recent assaults they believe were hate crimes and to ask for more representation in the city administration. “Osama go back home. You don’t belong here,” Sunny Kumar, 33, who is on the board of Nanak Naam Jahaj Gurudwara temple on West Side Avenue, said a Sikh man was told while being assaulted on Feb. 15 on Liberty Avenue off Carlton Avenue during a dispute about snow shoveling. Kumar said part of the man’s beard was torn out, he was kicked in the stomach, beaten with a shovel, had bruises on his chest and pain in his jaw

DES MOINES, [IA]—A West Des Moines man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of making threats against President Barack Obama. The indictment, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Des Moines, says 24-year-old Kerry Dale Downard wrote on Feb. 10 that he would murder the president. A complaint filed Feb. 14 by U.S. Secret Service Agent Timothy Murphy says Downard was in the Polk County Jail charged with vehicle theft when he wrote the threat. The second count stems from a conversation Downard had with agents at the jail on Feb. 13 in which he said he would shoot the president. Court records say Downard has a history of mental health issues. No one answered the telephone

UNIONTOWN, [PA]—A Fayette County man already in prison for his conviction on charges of making terroristic threats and aggravated indecent assault on a child is facing new charges related to threatening President Barack Obama. PLANO, [TX]—Self-described political activist Anson Chi has submitted a request to withdraw his guilty plea to attempting to blow up a Plano natural gas pipeline. In the request, Chi wrote that he told his attorney at the end of September that he wanted to withdraw his plea, but had not heard from him or his other attorney for more than four months. In June 2012, Chi was arrested on suspicion of trying to set off a bomb at an Atmos gas regulator station on West Parker Road in Plano. CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLE, [CN]—A Charlottetown court got a little confusing Monday as a man suspected of trying to follow the Freemen-on-the-Land doctrine came before the judge. John James MacLean, 55, appeared for the first time in provincial court Monday to face charges of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, evading police during a vehicle pursuit and dangerous driving from an incident on Jan. 2 this year. He was to enter a plea on the charges, either saying he was guilty or instead, going to trial on a not-guilty plea. Often lawyers ask for delays at this point in a case to assemble information and develop a plan, but MacLean appeared in court without a lawyer. As the

HOLLISTER, [AR]—An Arkansas man with ties to the Ku Klux Klan is charged with sexual assault of a teen. Floyd Melton Lewis was arrested this weekend at his house after someone called police saying he was growing marijuana. But it wasn't just pot deputies say they found at his house in Bergman, near Hollister. "Anytime you pull up to a residence and you see a place where a cross has been burned, it's enough to raise an alarm," says the Boone County Sheriff. Deputies say they got a call that Lewis was growing marijuana, selling prescription medications and that he took naked pictures of a 13-year-old girl. That teen is now in state custody. When deputies went to Lewis house, Moore says they
