WASHINGTON, [MO]--There is a growing number of loosely assembled anarchists called “sovereign citizens,” who are causing a stir in county recorders’ offices nationwide. And some of them are asserting their presence in Franklin County, and have been here for years. Some denounce their citizenship, or reject their Social Security numbers. Other so-called sovereign citizens are more malicious and have illegally claimed property and placed fraudulent liens on other people’s property, creating legal obstacles for homeowners trying to sell their homes or who are applying for loans to remodel. They also are called “freemen,” and even labeled “paper terrorists,” according to the Fran

BISMARCK, [ND]--A white supremacist who tried to take control of a small North Dakota town where he had hoped to establish an Aryan enclave is following through with plans to try to move to Missouri. Craig Cobb, 62, was last month sentenced to four years of probation for terrorizing the residents of Leith. Cobb said during his sentencing that he wanted to go to his native state of Missouri to care for his mother. He told The Associated Press in April that he was tired of being in the spotlight and wanted to "retire from white nationalism." Cobb made a formal request to Missouri to accept him through an interstate compact that regulates the supervision of adult offenders, a North Dakota Corre

BOZEMAN, [MT]--The Gallatin County Commission today will consider a request to investigate an alleged government conspiracy against a leader in an anti-government movement to form citizen grand juries and expose supposed corruption. Bozeman resident William Wolf submitted the request to the County Commission in February. The 10-page document alleges that Gallatin County Justices Bryan Adams, Wanda Drusch and Rick West, along with Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin, deprived Ernie Wayne terTelgte of his freedom and financial wealth and retaliated against him by falsifying documents and giving false statements. Wolf is a member of a group advocating the use of a citizen's grand jury to bypa

BUCKTOWN, [MD]--It's not what you want to see when you go to Harriet Tubman's birthplace.  Racist graffiti including KKK, as well as the n-word and other crude pictures.  WBOC showed the uncensored versions to Shondolyn Dotson and her friend Shawanda Mccray, who work in Cambridge. Neighbors believe it's a hate crime.  Neighbors who live near the site, one of whom owns the very building where Harriet Tubman committed her first act of defiance, say it was likely teenagers. The Dorchester County Sheriff's office says Meredith's hunch is right.  The department is in the process of arresting 5 teenagers, some over age 18 for the vandalism.  And everyone has an idea of what to do with them.

GREENWOOD, [SC]--Residents of Abbeville and Abbeville County have no control over what is being billed as a “KKK Jam,” a gathering of the New Empire Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in July. If information that has been disseminated online about the event is true, then there will indeed be a gathering on private property in the county. The person behind the event makes it sound as though it is nothing but a bunch of buddies getting together, something seemingly as innocuous as a class reunion. “My hopes are to have good fellowship, see old friends, make new friends, have a few laughs and talk politics,” he said in a story published Sunday in this newspaper. Interesting, coming from a pers

SHELBYVILLE, [IN]--A flyer promoting the United Northern and Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan appeared over the weekend in portions of Shelby County. The flyer, which reads, "In 1923, the Klan was a strong force in America. God-Race-Nation and family values were instilled in every one of the 48 states at that time. Since God has been taken from us, America has been on the decline. Let's bring back America to the strength and power it once had," was found in the Waldron and St. Paul areas in bags with white rocks. The flyer features writing on both sides, and the other side states "Jesus is Risen," and asks for people to answer the call of Jesus and not sit idly by while "the devil unwave

BIRMINGHAM, [NJ]--A white segregationist group that calls itself the Advanced White Society lists its national headquarters as Birmingham, N.J., a woodsy, little-known hamlet on the edge of Pemberton Township. The Burlington County community had 33 residents, including one African American and one Latino, in 2010, according to a U.S. Census report. It has its own post office and is also home to a chemical plant and a cabinetmaking business. The Fort Dix military base is several miles down the road. The Advanced White Society is one of five active hate groups in Burlington County, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama group that monitors such organizations nationwide. Quiet

HINESVILLE, [GA]--Since Barack Obama was elected President, militia groups have proliferated in the United States. In 2010, Daryl Johnson, then a senior domestic-terror analyst at the Department of Homeland Security, found that the number had more than tripled in the past three years, from eighty-five to more than three hundred. The times are conducive to extremist anger: there is a black President, a sputtering economy, a disappearing white majority, and recurring talk of stricter gun laws. According to one expert, the militia movement, which was largely middle-aged in the nineteen-nineties, has recently attracted a surge of younger adherents through social-networking sites. It can be diffi

POCATELLO, [ID]--Political candidate flyers and brochures supporting or opposing the city’s existing anti-discrimination ordinance were joined by recruitment literature from the Ku Klux Klan at one residence on the east side of the city, according to the Pocatello Police Chief.  Someone emailed the police chief a photo of the literature Friday morning. It was an invitation to join the “white power” movement. Back in April 2010, white supremacy literature distributed by a group allied with the Aryan Nations was found in yards in the university neighborhood of Pocatello. Small fliers were wrapped around a small rock and placed inside a clear sandwich bag. They were titled “Missing
