CHATTANOOGA, [TN]--Chattanooga police increased patrols near local Jewish centers and places of worship Sunday after damaged vehicles were found at the Jewish Cultural Center in the morning. Two cars in the parking lot were burned, one more severely than the other. Another vehicle was parked next to them but did not appear to have serious damage. Police and leaders in the local Jewish community did not publicly jump to conclusions about the incident, but police said in a news release they were trying to determine if prejudice was behind the blaze. The executive director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga, Michael Dzik, said in a statement his organization was letting authorit

JOSEPHINE COUNTY, [OR]--Last April 11 — around the first anniversary of the Bundy Ranch standoff — Joseph Rice, a leader of the Josephine County Oath Keepers, put out a national call to action for Operation Gold Rush, asking members and other Patriots to help the Sugar Pine miners fight the BLM. The miners and Rice said they feared the feds would burn their property and steal their equipment. Three Percent of Idaho — a right-wing militia group founded in 2008 with chapters across the country — put out their own press releases about the security operation, and militia-types from Arizona posted a YouTube video of themselves driving to Oregon. Local blogger Dale Matthews released a vide

BURNS, [OR]--Robert "LaVoy" Finicum is a martyr and was murdered, backers of an armed group of occupiers who took over an Oregon federal wildlife refuge said when they learned the group’s de facto spokesman was fatally shot during a police maneuver Tuesday. Although differing accounts of  Mr. Finicum's shooting already have emerged from witnesses — one says he had his hands up in surrender while another says he rushed at police — extremism experts warn that supporters will likely try to use the death as a rallying cry for their cause. Authorities on Wednesday had yet to even confirm that Mr. Finicum, a father of 11 children, was killed. Confirmation came from witnesses, family and fr

BURNS, [OR]--A northeast Kansas woman has taken seven of her children to Oregon to perform for the armed occupiers who seized control of a federal wildlife refuge earlier this month. Odalis Sharp, of Auburn, Kan., appears with the children on a video taken Saturday at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, a bird sanctuary in the eastern part of the state. "We’re here to sing for the Lord,” Sharp tells the anti-government militants. “This is a very worthwhile cause, and we just hope to make a difference and we hope to just be able to bless the hearts of the people through the songs.” But critics say taking children to such an event is dangerous and irresponsible. “You have these imp

BURNS, [OR]--This past Saturday, 62-year-old Florida resident Joaquin Mariano DeMoreta-Folch asked Hammond to sign a piece of paper titled “Demand to Amend With No Delay.” Hammond told OPB she believed the document would help set up a hearing that would eventually clear her husband, Dwight Hammond, and her son Steven Hammond of federal arson convictions. The two men are currently serving five-year sentences at Terminal Island, a federal prison in Los Angeles County, California. It’s unclear if Susie Hammond was fully aware that in signing that document, she became a willing participant in a so-called citizens grand jury – an extralegal proceeding which experts say shows an escalati

BURNS, [OR]--The FBI has begun negotiations with militants at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, specifically with militant leader Ammon Bundy. Guards at the occupied refuge are now openly carrying assault rifles on the grounds, while men drive federally owned bulldozers to pave roads. More people are coming too — from Cleveland, San Diego, and right here in Oregon. These new recruits are joining a culture increasingly hostile to people who disagree with their beliefs. And now, they want to try and convict those people. It’s called a Citizens’ Grand Jury and it's the newest development inside the Oregon occupation. If you’ve ever watched “Law and Order,” you’ve probably

BURNS, [OR]--It has been two weeks since armed militants broke into buildings at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. “The residents of Harney County have been overlooked and underserved by federal official’s response thus far,” said Gov. Kate Brown at a press conference in Salem. “I have conveyed these very grave concerns directly to our leaders at the highest levels of our government.” Brown said inaction by federal officials is costing Harney County and the state of Oregon $100,000 per week. To help pay those costs for law enforcement and other personnel, Brown told reporters she would seek appropriations from state lawmakers, with the expectation that federal lawmakers will e

WILMINGTON, [NC]--A Pennsylvania man will spend the next 12 years in prison for numerous federal offenses, including the discovery of explosive devices found in a Wilmington storage unit in 2013. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Istvan Merchenthaler, 45, was sentenced Wednesday for wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, money laundering, filing false tax returns, interstate transportation of stolen property, possessing unregistered destructive devices, possessing firearms and ammunition as a fugitive and possessing an illegally manufactured firearm. The charges stem from federal indictments in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Merchenthaler claimed to be the founder of

BURNS, [OR]--Cattlemen in southeast Oregon are quietly negotiating with the Bureau of Land Management to restore grazing privileges to a pair of ranchers serving five-year prison sentences for setting fires on federal lands. The negotiations come as armed militants led by Ammon Bundy continue to occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to protest the imprisonment of Dwight and Steven Hammond and the federal government's ownership of lands in the West. In Harney County, the decision last October by a federal district judge to extend the Hammonds' prison sentences to five years, as required under an anti-terrorism law, was viewed as a miscarriage of justice. A federal jury in 2012 had co

SAVANNAH, [GA]--Just days after Martin Luther King Day, a town in Georgia was hit with a new wave of flyers promoting recruitment to the Klu Klux Klan and asked readers to help “stop the spread of Islam in our country.” Similar flyers were left on lawns in Alabama as well. In Central Texas, KKK flyers and pamphlets were distributed in Round Rock and South Austin in September.  View More>>
