BEAVER, [UT]--Even with Cliven Bundy and many of his militia supporters in jail, anger toward the federal government is still running high in some parts of the West. Clashes between ranchers and federal land managers over grazing rights are continuing. In southern Utah, things have gotten so bad lately that some local sheriffs have threatened to arrest federal rangers who try to close forest roads and cut off access to ranchers and other users. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether Garfield County Sheriff James "Danny" Perkins is serious or pulling your leg. Garfield County is roughly the size of Connecticut, and it's up to Perkins and a half dozen deputies to patrol all of it. Federal lan

NEWARK, [NJ]--A gas station owner was shot to death in Newark Monday afternoon, and the man's family said they think he was targeted because he is Sikh. Davinder Singh, 47, was shot at the Power Gas Station on West Market Street sometime before 4:25 p.m. Monday. Police said Singh, of Iselin, was found unresponsive at the gas station and taken to a University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 4:45 p.m. Singh's son, Jatinder Singh, said that he thought his father, who had moved to the United States from India 25 years ago may have been targeted because he was Sikh and wore a turban. UNITED STATES, [US]--Assaults against national forest and rangeland employees and facilities rose sharply last year, according to figures released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). Reported incidents nearly doubled (87% increase) on rangelands overseen by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and increased by more than half (60%) on national forests. The figures collected from agencies under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) cover the year after the 2014 armed stan-off with renegade rancher Cliven Bundy but before the seizure of a national wildlife refuge in Oregon by armed militia led by two of Bundy’s sons. The U.S. Justice Department no longer systemat

SEATTLE, [WA]--A fire that burned a former church building over the weekend is the third church arson in one week, Clark County authorities say. The three early-morning blazes are being investigated as if they are connected, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. A fire Sunday caused about $25,000 in damages to a former church building that is being converted into a youth treatment center. Bethesda Slavic Church previously occupied the building in Brush Prairie, but it has been vacant for a while. The first two church blazes happened within 24 hours of each other. The First Congregational United Church of Christ burned early Wednesday, followed by a fire at the Liberty Bible Ch

REDMOND, [OR]--B.J. Soper took aim with his AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and fired a dozen shots at a human silhouette target. Soper’s wife and their 16-year-old daughter practiced drawing pistols. Then Soper helped his 4-year-old daughter, in pink sneakers and a ponytail, work on her marksmanship with a .22-caliber rifle. Deep in the heart of a vast U.S. military training ground, surrounded by spent shotgun shells and juniper trees blasted to shreds, the Central Oregon Constitutional Guard was conducting its weekly firearms training. Soper, 40, is a building contractor who is an emerging leader in a growing national movement rooted in distrust of the federal government, one that increasing

HARNEY COUNTY, [OR]--Voters in rural Harney County, Oregon, overwhelmingly rejected the ideology of right-wing militia members who made the local wildlife refuge famous with their ill-fated occupation earlier this year. Candidates sympathetic to Ammon Bundy and his fellow "patriots" were overwhelmingly voted down in Tuesday's election, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. Statewide, only a little more than half of Oregon's eligible voters turned out in Tuesday's primary — despite the fact that, as Rolling Stone reported, officials have made it quite easy to vote in the state. Harney County, by contrast, saw 72 percent of eligible voters cast ballots — the highest rate of voter par

BRUNSWICK, [GA]--Federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents and Glynn County fire marshals are jointly investigating a fire that destroyed a church in the pre-dawn hours Friday off U.S. 17 in northern Glynn County, county spokeswoman Kathryn Downs said. The fire at New Covenant Church of God at 4263 U.S. 17 was reported at 4:41 a.m., and Glynn County firefighters were on scene by 4:50 a.m. However, the wooden structure was declared a total loss, Downs said. A team of ATF and Glynn fire marshals are jointly investigating to determine the origin of the fire at the predominantly African-American church, although it is too early to tell whether arson is suspected, Downs said. View More&

TALLAHASSEE, [FL]--A self-described “right-wing extremist nut” and member of the Republic of Florida militia upset over a $60 debt faces charges after threatening a high-ranking staff member of Gov. Rick Scott’s office. Jordan Jereb, a captain of the Republic of Florida militia, according to numerous videos the 20-year-old has posted online, was arrested on charges of threatening and trying to extort Stuart Pollins, a deputy policy coordinator in the Office of Policy and Budget. Jereb left Pollins three threatening voice mails and contacted him on Facebook trying to get him to repay money, he said, Pollins’ son stole from him, according to court records. PORTLAND, [OR]--Jailed cattle rancher Cliven Bundy claims President Barack Obama, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid and others have stifled his constitutional rights as he sits in solitary confinement on charges stemming from a 2014 federal standoff, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday. Bundy, 70, is seeking $50 million for the “illegal, unconstitutional, intentional and malicious acts” of the defendants, and wants an indictment against him quashed and his immediate release from jail in Portland, Oregon. Bundy added that he’s been in solitary since his arrest earlier this year — which constitutes “cruel and unusual punishment,” claims the suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Nevada. Bun
