UNITED STATES, [US]--White supremacists and other domestic extremists maintain an active presence in U.S. police departments and other law enforcement agencies. A striking reference to that conclusion, notable for its confidence and the policy prescriptions that accompany it, appears in a classified FBI Counterterrorism Policy Guide from April 2015, obtained by The Intercept. “Federal law enforcement agencies in general — the FBI, the Marshals, the ATF — are aware that extremists have infiltrated state and local law enforcement agencies and that there are people in law enforcement agencies that may be sympathetic to these groups,” said Daryl Johnson, who was the lead researcher on th

UNITED STATES, [US]--Most Americans don't actually know any Muslims -- at least, not personally. More than 6 in 10 have seldom or never had a conversation with a Muslim, according to a study conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute. Most Americans also say they know little (57%) or nothing at all (26%) about Islam. Those numbers have barely budged in 30 years, even after 9/11, two American-led wars in Muslim-majority countries, local and national outreach campaigns by Muslim mosques and organizations, dozens of terrorist attacks worldwide, high-profile congressional hearings and copious media coverage of Islam. All of which suggests that Americans are not just widely ignorant abou

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC, [CN]--Quebec City police say six people are dead and eight are injured after a gunman opened fire Sunday night at a mosque during evening prayers. Dozens of people were believed to be at the mosque at the time of the shooting. Two men were arrested after the shooting, the AP reported, citing police, but one was later released after police determined he was not involved in the shooting. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard termed the act “barbaric violence.” The lone gunman opened fire in the men's section of the mosque. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the shooting a "terrorist attack on Muslims." “While authorities are still investigating and details con

CORPUS CHRISTI, [TX]--For members of the Islamic Society of Southern Texas, a mosque fire in Victoria "hit too close to home." "A mosque in a Muslim community ... it's literally the heart of our community," said Fiona Tagari, a member of the Corpus Christi mosque. "A lot of us are immigrants. We don't have families here, so it's where we make our families. Congregants become extended families." Local members, including Dr. Samer Jifi Bahlool, traveled back and forth to the site of the Victoria Islamic Center on Saturday and again Sunday after news broke an early morning fire destroyed the mosque. The cause of the mosque fire is unknown and being investigated by the Victoria Fire Marshal's Of

MADISON, [WI]--A University of Wisconsin-Madison student who once served prison time for setting fires at two predominantly black churches is recruiting on campus for a local chapter of a national pro-white party, enraging students searching for ways to improve race relations. Daniel Dropik, 33, said frustration over the Black Lives Matter movement's presence on campus and university courses examining white and male privilege led him to start a local chapter of the American Freedom Party. The American Freedom Party is a political party with deep ties to white supremacism, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups. Dropik's recruiting comes as minorities have been

AURORA, [CO]--Aurora police are investigating a bias-motivated crime after two threatening notes were found at an Aurora community center. Police say the case is a “priority.” Since 2014, the Mango House has helped refugees with medical and dental care, as well as citizenship classes. On Thursday morning, two types notes were discovered on its property -- one in the parking lot, the other in a stairwell. The typewritten notes read, “We’re gonna blow up all of you refugees.” Many of the people who get assistance at Mango House have fled from strife and civil war. Moving away from their homeland wasn't necessarily a part of their life plan. View More>>

WOODLAND, [CA]--A burglary, attempted arson and hate crime has drawn swift reaction from a Woodland city councilman and others. Fourth District Councilman Enrique Fernandez said he was “sickened by the hateful and vitriolic acts of intolerance that took place this weekend at Quizno’s. “The owner, a man of the Sikh faith, informed me that his restaurant had been broken into and heinously vandalized,” stated Fernandez in a Facebook post. “The culprit(s) then attempted to start a fire in the kitchen. Such abhorrent and offensive abuse should never have to be endured by anyone in our community!” Others responding to Fernandez, such as Noel Rodriguez, responded that Woodland civic lea

SEATTLE, [WA]--The man who told police he shot and wounded another man during a violent demonstration over the appearance of Milo Yiannopoulos at the University of Washington sent a social-media message to the Breitbart News editor just an hour before the shooting. “Hey Milo,” the 29-year-old former UW student posted to Yiannopoulos’ Facebook page at 7:24 p.m. “im outside in line to your UW event. “I got sucker punched (he was a bit limp wristed) and someone jacked my #MAGA hat,” he said, referring to the ubiquitous red and white “Make America Great Again” caps worn by supporters of President Trump. Yiannopoulos did not respond, and the man went on to be caught up in a raucou

UNITED STATES, [US]--More than two dozen Jewish community centers across the U.S. reported receiving false bomb threats on Wednesday. It's the second wave of bomb threats in two weeks: On Jan. 9, 16 community centers received threats in a single day. No actual bombs have been found, according to the JCC Association of North America, and many centers have already reopened and resumed regular operations. The FBI is investigating "possible civil rights violations in connection with threats." The threatening calls led the Anti-Defamation League to issue a security advisory to Jewish institutions across the country. Bomb threats were made in at least 18 states, the ADL says: New York, New Jersey,
