CAPE CORAL, [FL]--In the last three years, two incidents possibly involving the Ku Klux Klan have raised the attention of residents in Southwest Florida’s biggest city. There’s conflicting evidence from two groups intent on tracking hate crimes across our area about whether the KKK actually has a chapter and exists in Cape Coral. “Even now racial hatred is alive and well in Lee County,” said James Muwakkil, president of SWFL NAACP. Muwakkil said he believes the KKK operates here but he attributes that information to a different organization. In August, Cape Coral City Council candidate James Schneider reported to police that someone dropped off a threatening letter claiming to be from the KKK and demanding that he drop out of the race because he identifies as gay. In 2015, some Cape residents woke up to find KKK recruitment letters on their doorstep with candy. A 2014 police report details an incident where a woman called police after someone threw a brick inscribed with “You’re Dead N****" through her window. “When it comes to hate crimes itself, we probably see a handful each year,” said Cape Coral Police Lt. Dana Coston. Coston said CCPD monitors hate group activity but has no evidence of a KKK chapter within the city. View More>>
